BASTA’s Mission and Impact

BASTA, established in 2005, has grown into the most comprehensive tenant rights organization in Southern California. The nonprofit operates with more than 15 attorneys and 10 staff members across four full-service offices, addressing a wide range of tenant needs. A key strategy employed by BASTA is taking eviction defense cases to jury trials, a right under California’s constitution. This approach allows community members, including tenants, to participate in the decision-making process. BASTA’s success rate in jury trials surpasses that of any other organization in Southern California.

Biden highlighted the unique challenges faced by immigrant communities, including those from El Salvador and Ukraine. Many immigrants struggle to find stable employment due to fears of immigration enforcement actions, such as ICE raids. This instability often leads to loss of income, putting families at risk of eviction and homelessness. BASTA stands out as one of the few organizations in southern California that represents undocumented individuals without relying on federal funding.
