The first-ever Hermes Birkin bag, designed for the late celebrity Jane Birkin, has set a new record at a Sotheby’s auction in Paris. The bag sold for an astounding 8.58 million euros ($10 million), surpassing previous records for handbags. This modern design classic, owned by a Paris-based collector, ignited a fierce telephone bidding war, with the final price including commission and fees.
The auction opened with a gasp-inducing bid of 1 million euros, quickly escalating to the final sale price. The winning bid came from a private collector in Japan, who outbid eight other contenders. Sotheby’s did not disclose further details about the buyer.
The Birkin bag has become an icon of exclusivity, offered by Hermes only to its most loyal clients. Modern versions start at around $10,000. The previous auction record was held by a diamond-encrusted Hermes Kelly 28, which sold for $513,000 in 2021. Sotheby’s anticipated that this prototype would surpass that figure.
Catherine Benier, the bag’s previous owner and a boutique owner in Paris, expressed her astonishment at the sale’s outcome. She described the bag as the “jewel” of her collection and shared her mixed feelings of nostalgia and happiness that it found a new home.
The Birkin bag originated from a chance encounter between Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas of Hermes during a flight in 1984. Designed to meet Birkin’s needs as a young mother, the bag became a fashion legend. The prototype features unique elements like closed metal rings and a built-in nail clipper, reflecting its extensive use by Birkin.
The sale highlights the fashion industry’s shift from “quiet luxury” to more ostentatious styles. This trend aligns with recent runway aesthetics dubbed “boom boom” by trend forecasters.
Despite its allure, the Birkin bag has faced controversies, including legal challenges from frustrated buyers and animal rights issues raised by Jane Birkin herself regarding Hermes’ use of crocodile skins.
