Idaho Manhunt for Suspected Killer Father Stalls After False Sighting

The search for Travis Decker, a father accused of murdering his three daughters, has encountered another setback following a false sighting in Idaho. Decker, 33, a former U.S. military member and skilled wilderness survivalist, is wanted for allegedly killing his daughters—Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5—before disappearing into the Washington wilderness. The manhunt began after the girls’ mother reported them missing when they failed to return from a court-mandated custody visit on May 30.

Authorities received a tip about a possible sighting of Decker in Idaho’s Sawtooth National Forest over the Fourth of July weekend, raising hopes of a breakthrough in the case. However, the U.S. Marshals Service later confirmed that the individual in question was not Decker after interviewing him. The man shared physical characteristics with Decker, including height, weight, dark features, and tattoos.

The search for Decker has involved multiple agencies, including local law enforcement, the U.S. Marshals Service, and Border Patrol’s Tactical Unit. They have been scouring the vast wilderness by land and air. Cadaver dogs have also been deployed to assist in the search efforts. Despite these extensive measures, there is no concrete evidence indicating Decker’s current whereabouts or whether he remains alive.

The investigation took a grim turn when the bodies of Decker’s daughters were discovered at Rock Island Campground with plastic bags over their heads and hands bound. Decker’s abandoned pickup truck was found nearby with traces of blood matching his DNA on the tailgate. This evidence has led authorities to rule out additional suspects in the case.

Decker is considered armed and dangerous but not an immediate threat to public safety. He faces charges of aggravated first-degree murder and kidnapping. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest as authorities continue their search.
