India secured a memorable victory against England on the final day of the Test match at The Oval, concluding the series with a 2-2 draw. Despite the win, India remains in third place on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. The match was a nail-biting affair, with England needing just 35 runs to win on a drizzly morning. However, India’s bowlers rose to the occasion, delivering a thrilling performance that captivated fans.
The day began with England requiring 35 runs to reach their target of 374. Mohammed Siraj was instrumental in India’s success, taking three crucial wickets and finishing with five for the innings. Prasidh Krishna also played a key role, claiming the wicket of Josh Tongue with a yorker when England needed just 17 more runs. The tension was palpable as England’s batting line-up struggled against India’s relentless bowling attack.
In a remarkable display of sportsmanship, allrounder Chris Woakes came out to bat one-handed due to a dislocated left shoulder. His bravery was acknowledged by a standing ovation from the crowd. Woakes managed to run a bye in pain to get off strike, while Gus Atkinson attempted to shield him from facing deliveries. Despite their efforts, Atkinson was eventually bowled by Siraj, sealing England’s fate at 367 all out.
India’s decision not to take the second new ball proved wise as their bowlers continued to extract movement from the old ball. Jamie Overton and Jamie Smith were dismissed early in the day, setting the stage for India’s victory. Overton’s attempt to defend Siraj’s wobble ball resulted in an LBW decision that was upheld upon review.
Following their victory, Indian players celebrated on the field but took time to commend Woakes for his valiant effort. The match was not only a testament to India’s skill but also highlighted the spirit of cricket, as both teams displayed resilience and sportsmanship throughout.
