India’s Prominent Family Feuds: Kapur, Ambani, Modi, and More

Kapur Family Dispute Over Sona Group Legacy

Rani Kapur, the mother of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has made serious allegations against her daughter-in-law, Priya Sachdev Kapur. She claims she was coerced into signing documents to usurp control of the Sona Group, a conglomerate with interests in agriculture, textiles, construction, IT, education, and biotech. The company has a market capitalization of nearly Rs 30,000 crore. Rani Kapur has demanded the postponement of an AGM and expressed concerns about not being consulted on Priya’s appointment as a non-executive director. The company maintains that Rani Kapur has not been a shareholder since 2019.

Modi Family’s Ongoing Legal Battle

The Modi family is embroiled in a legal battle over the inheritance left by Krishan Kumar Modi. His will divided his Rs 11,000 crore estate among his wife and children. However, Samir Modi filed a lawsuit against his mother Bina Modi for allegedly mishandling company affairs. The conflict intensified when shareholders of Godfrey Philips supported Bina Modi, leading to Samir’s removal from the board. Despite this setback, Samir and Lalit Modi continue to hold their shares.

Oberoi Family’s Will Dispute

The Oberoi family is another example of inheritance disputes following the death of Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi. The conflict involves two wills and a codicil that divide his assets among his daughter Anastasia and her stepsiblings. Anastasia supports the 2022 codicil favoring her and her mother, while her stepsiblings back an earlier will. Legal proceedings have been initiated to resolve these differences.

Bajaj Family’s Amicable Resolution

Unlike other families, the Bajaj family resolved their differences peacefully after Rahul Bajaj’s death in 2022. His sons Rajiv and Sanjiv Bajaj restructured the company to pursue their separate visions, resulting in the creation of Bajaj Auto and Bajaj Finserv.

Ambani Brothers’ Public Feud

The Ambani brothers’ feud began after Dhirubhai Ambani died without a will in 2002. Their mother Kokilaben mediated a division of Reliance Industries between Mukesh and Anil Ambani. Despite this settlement, public disputes continued until Mukesh helped Anil financially in 2018. However, Anil’s business challenges persist amid ongoing investigations.
