India Gains Support from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Asia Cup Venue Dispute

India Secures Backing in Asia Cup Venue Controversy

In a significant development amid the ongoing Asia Cup venue dispute, India has garnered support from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. This backing comes as India pushes to relocate the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) from Dhaka. The meeting, originally scheduled for July 24-25, was to be chaired by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has advocated for a change in venue due to escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh. The support from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan marks a crucial shift in the dynamics of this contentious issue.

Implications for the Pakistan Cricket Board

The PCB faces a setback as India’s proposal gains traction. According to ACC regulations, the AGM requires the attendance of three permanent Test-playing members. With Sri Lanka and Afghanistan siding with India, the PCB’s position is weakened. Additionally, at least 10 full or Associate members must be present for the meeting to proceed. Countries like Oman, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, and Indonesia have uncertain participation, further complicating matters for the PCB.

Geopolitical Tensions Influence Cricket Decisions

The BCCI’s insistence on changing the venue stems from heightened diplomatic strains with Bangladesh. Mohsin Naqvi, head of both PCB and ACC, has resisted any venue changes and notably skipped the ICC Annual Conference in Singapore. This situation underscores how geopolitical tensions are increasingly impacting cricket administration.

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Role Under Scrutiny

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) finds itself in a delicate position. Aminul Islam, interim head of BCB, agreed to host the AGM without fully considering its geopolitical ramifications. A BCB insider suggested that Aminul could have managed the situation more cautiously when approached by PCB’s president. Despite requests to cancel the meeting to avoid antagonizing the BCCI, Aminul felt compelled to honor his commitment to PCB.
