Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that India has achieved substantial benefits in its Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the United Kingdom. This landmark agreement is designed to bolster economic ties between the two nations while ensuring the protection of India’s sensitive sectors. Goyal emphasized that the deal does not compromise on India’s core interests, particularly in areas such as rice, sugar, and dairy, which are crucial to the country’s agricultural economy.
The agreement specifically safeguards sensitive sectors by maintaining protective measures for domestic industries. This includes ensuring that Indian farmers and producers in the rice, sugar, and dairy industries are not adversely affected by foreign competition. By doing so, the agreement aims to preserve the livelihoods of millions of Indian workers dependent on these sectors.
One of the significant aspects of CETA is the reduction of duties on automobiles and Scotch whisky. This move is expected to make these products more affordable for Indian consumers while fostering increased trade between India and the UK. The reduction in tariffs is anticipated to benefit both economies by enhancing market access and encouraging bilateral trade.
The agreement also addresses intellectual property rights, ensuring that India’s innovations and creations are adequately protected. Furthermore, CETA grants recognition to India’s Geographical Indication (GI) products, such as Kolhapuri chappals. This recognition is crucial for promoting India’s unique cultural heritage and boosting exports of these traditional products.
The successful negotiation of CETA marks a significant milestone in India-UK relations, setting a precedent for future trade agreements. It reflects India’s commitment to engaging in mutually beneficial partnerships while safeguarding its economic interests. As both countries look forward to strengthening their economic ties, this agreement lays a solid foundation for enhanced cooperation in various sectors.
