The Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, has disclosed significant details about Operation Sindoor, revealing that five Pakistani fighter jets and a large aircraft were downed. This revelation marks a major disclosure of the operation’s success in weakening Pakistan’s air capabilities. The operation also resulted in the destruction of two additional Pakistani aircraft on the ground, further diminishing their aerial strength.
During his address at the 16th Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Lecture in Bengaluru, Air Chief Marshal Singh attributed these aerial victories to the Russian-made S-400 air defence system. This advanced system played a pivotal role in achieving the crucial mid-air kills, showcasing its effectiveness in modern warfare scenarios.
Among the downed aircraft was a “big bird,” likely an AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) or an electronic intelligence platform. The loss of such a strategic asset is a severe blow to Pakistan’s air force, significantly impacting their operational capabilities and intelligence gathering.
Air Chief Marshal Singh presented satellite images from the May 7 attack, highlighting the precision of the strikes. The images depicted minimal collateral damage at Bahawalpur, the JeM headquarters, with adjacent buildings remaining largely intact. This precision was further corroborated by local media reports providing inside views of the targeted areas.
Operation Sindoor was launched as a decisive response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 innocent lives. The Indian military offensive targeted nine terror sites, eliminating over a hundred terrorists and demonstrating India’s commitment to counter-terrorism efforts.
