Indian Army Refutes Drone Attack Allegations on ULFA-I Camp in Myanmar

Indian Army Denies Drone Strike Claims

The Indian Army has officially denied allegations of conducting drone strikes on the eastern headquarters of the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Myanmar. These claims were made by ULFA-I, which stated that their camp was targeted in the early hours, resulting in significant casualties.

ULFA-I’s Allegations and Casualty Claims

According to a press statement released by ULFA-I, the alleged cross-border drone strikes led to the death of 19 cadres and injured another 19. The group also reported that senior commander Nayan Medhi was among those killed. Additionally, members of Manipuri insurgent groups, including the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), were reportedly present at the camp and suffered casualties.

Official Response from the Indian Army

In response to these allegations, Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, PRO Defence Guwahati, stated that there are no inputs with the Indian Army regarding such an operation. This official denial aims to clarify the situation amidst rising tensions and speculation.

Current Status of ULFA-I Leadership

ULFA-I, led by Paresh Barua, is currently experiencing a decline in its insurgency activities. With only one senior functionary, Arunodoy Dohotiya, remaining in Myanmar, the group’s operational capabilities are reportedly diminished. Another senior commander, Rupom Asom, was arrested by Assam Police earlier this year.

Context of Regional Instability

The India-Myanmar border has been a hotspot for militant activities, with several banned outfits using it as a base for operations. Myanmar’s current political climate under the Tatmadaw (Army) has seen increased militant attacks. The Indian security establishment remains concerned about these developments, especially following a recent encounter near the border that resulted in multiple militant casualties.
