During the final day of the fourth Test match against England at Old Trafford, Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill disclosed a pivotal decision made by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. With 15 overs left in the day, England’s Ben Stokes proposed ending the match in a draw. However, Jadeja and Sundar, both nearing their centuries, opted to continue playing. This decision proved fruitful as both players achieved their respective centuries, showcasing their resilience and strategic acumen.
Shubman Gill expressed immense satisfaction with the team’s batting performance under pressure. He emphasized the importance of focusing on each ball and taking the game deep into the final session. Gill highlighted that every match offers valuable lessons, reinforcing the significance of playing for the country with dedication and pride.
Reflecting on the first innings, Gill noted that while the team posted a competitive total, many batters failed to capitalize on their starts. The second innings, however, saw a marked improvement with set batters like Jadeja and Sundar making significant contributions. Gill also mentioned that despite uncertainties regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s participation, the team’s focus remained on winning matches.
Ben Stokes, along with teammates Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, questioned India’s decision to continue batting. In a light-hearted exchange, Stokes sarcastically asked if they wanted to score a hundred against Harry Brook. Jadeja responded gracefully, maintaining composure and asserting India’s right to continue batting as per the rules. In a symbolic gesture of defiance, Jadeja hit Brook for a six to complete his third Test century.
This strategic decision not only secured personal milestones for Jadeja and Sundar but also demonstrated India’s determination to play competitive cricket till the very end.
