An Indian woman visiting the United States is under investigation following an alleged theft at a Target store in Illinois. The incident unfolded after she spent over seven hours in the store, raising suspicions among staff members who then alerted the authorities. The woman is accused of attempting to steal merchandise valued at approximately $1,300, equivalent to Rs 1.1 lakh.
According to a video capturing police bodycam footage, a Target employee reported that the woman was seen roaming the aisles, picking up items, and checking her phone before attempting to exit through the west gate without paying. The employee’s observations led to police intervention.
Upon confrontation by the police, the woman expressed her willingness to pay for the items and attempted to resolve the situation amicably. She explained her unfamiliarity with local laws, stating, “I am really sorry to bother you if it is. I am not from this country. I am not going to stay here.” However, a police officer questioned her understanding of theft laws in India.
The police reviewed the bill and subsequently handcuffed her, taking her to the station for further paperwork. Although she has not been formally arrested yet, she is facing felony charges related to the incident. The video caption on YouTube notes that police were called on May 1, 2025, after she allegedly attempted to leave with unpaid merchandise.
The case has sparked significant attention online, with discussions focusing on shoplifting, visa status, and legal consequences for international visitors in the US. Social media users have expressed varied opinions, with some criticizing her actions as damaging to India’s reputation abroad.
This incident follows another recent case involving an Indian student accused of theft in Texas. Such charges can have severe implications for immigration status, potentially affecting H-1B renewals and green card applications, and may even lead to deportation.
