An Indian woman, Dania Faruqui, recently shared her eye-opening experience of visiting Shantou, a small town in China, on social media. As an IIM graduate based in Bengaluru, Ms. Faruqui was initially researching innovations in wearable electric technology when she discovered China’s leading role in the field. Her research led her to embark on an international trip that completely transformed her perspective on urban development.

A Surprising Encounter in Shantou

Upon arriving in Shantou, Ms. Faruqui expected a town similar to small towns in India, characterized by limited infrastructure and entertainment options. However, she was astonished to find wide, clean roads with dedicated lanes for pedestrians, electric two-wheelers, and cars. The town boasted luxury hotels like Sheraton at affordable rates and high-rise buildings that contradicted her initial expectations.

Impressive Urban Planning and Environment

Ms. Faruqui was particularly impressed by Shantou’s urban planning and environmental cleanliness. Despite being an industrial town, the air quality index was remarkably low at 5. The presence of numerous trees and a lack of visible garbage highlighted the town’s commitment to maintaining a clean environment.

Affordable Travel and Child-Friendly Spaces

Another aspect that surprised Ms. Faruqui was the affordability of domestic flights within China, with tickets available for as low as INR 5,000 when booked just two days in advance. She also noted the mindful inclusion of children’s engagement activities in public spaces, where kids could participate in hands-on activities rather than being glued to screens.

A Safe and Welcoming Experience

Throughout her visit, Ms. Faruqui felt safe and welcomed by the locals, despite not speaking Mandarin or blending in visually. Her experience challenged her preconceived notions about China’s infrastructure compared to India, concluding that China is indeed living in the future.
