A mysterious incident involving broken glass pieces scattered along a 1-kilometer stretch of the Kanwar Yatra route in East Delhi’s Dilshad Garden has prompted an investigation. The shards were discovered on a road frequented by barefoot pilgrims, raising concerns about potential harm and intent. The Delhi police have linked the incident to an e-rickshaw transporting glass panels through the area.
A video captured at night revealed the glass pieces reflecting vehicle headlights and glittering under streetlights. Geolocation data confirmed the video was recorded at 9:28 PM on Saturday in Zulfe Bengal, a sublocality in Dilshad Garden. Initial investigations suggest that the e-rickshaw, carrying 19 large glass panels between Delhi’s Seemapuri and Uttar Pradesh’s Shalimar Bagh, may have inadvertently caused the breakage.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Minister Kapil Mishra addressed the issue on social media, emphasizing swift action. The police and public works department (PWD) promptly cleared the road within two hours of discovery. An FIR has been filed, and the crime branch is actively investigating the matter to determine if there was any malicious intent.
The e-rickshaw driver, identified as Kusum Pal, a 43-year-old resident of Nand Nagri, has been detained for questioning. Authorities are working to ascertain how the glass shattered during transit and whether there was any deliberate motive behind the incident.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva expressed serious concerns over the incident, suggesting it might be a conspiracy by anti-social elements to disrupt peace. He criticized certain political parties for their silence, implying possible appeasement politics. Meanwhile, South Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankit Chauhan met with Kanwar camp organizers to discuss safety measures.
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra assured that no disruptions would be tolerated during the Kanwar Yatra. Dilshad Garden MLA Sanjay Goyal inspected the site, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been informed. The authorities remain committed to ensuring a safe pilgrimage for all participants.
