Iowa Republican Jim Carlin Challenges Sen. Joni Ernst Over Voting Record

Former Iowa State Senator Jim Carlin has set his sights on unseating U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, a fellow Republican, by criticizing her voting record. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Carlin argued that Ernst’s voting patterns do not align with traditional Republican values. He highlighted her 42% score from Heritage Action for America for the 118th congressional session as evidence. Although Carlin focused on this session’s score, Ernst holds a lifetime score of 63% from the conservative group.
Carlin’s criticism extends to Ernst’s support for the Respect for Marriage Act in 2022, where she was one of 12 Senate Republicans who voted alongside Democrats. This act, later signed into law by President Joe Biden, mandates that states recognize same-sex marriages and other states’ marriage records regardless of sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin. Carlin stated he would not have supported this measure and labeled Ernst a “Log Cabin hero,” referencing her association with the Log Cabin Republicans, a group advocating for LGBT conservatives and allies.
Despite his previous defeat by Sen. Chuck Grassley in the 2022 GOP U.S. Senate primary, Carlin remains undeterred in his campaign against Ernst. He emphasizes the national debt as a significant security threat and advocates for auditing or even abolishing the Federal Reserve. Additionally, he suggests a return to the gold standard to stabilize currency valuation.
In response to Carlin’s challenge, Ernst’s campaign manager Bryan Kraber defended her record of conservative leadership, highlighting her efforts in cutting waste and securing borders. Kraber expressed confidence that Iowans would reject Carlin’s campaign once again in 2026.
Carlin also addressed agricultural policies in Iowa, suggesting that federal subsidies are more detrimental than beneficial to the state’s agriculture sector. He advocates for more measured foreign aid policies, emphasizing the need for accountability and strategic allocation.
