Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has voiced his concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s approach during the recent Test series against England. Pathan criticized Bumrah for his ‘pick and choose’ strategy, which saw the fast bowler participating in only three out of the five scheduled matches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had previously announced that Bumrah would not play all the matches to manage his workload. Despite India’s trailing position at 1-2 with one match remaining, Bumrah was rested, a decision that has sparked debate among cricket analysts.
Pathan pointed out specific instances where he felt Bumrah could have exerted more effort. He cited the Lord’s Test as an example, where Bumrah bowled five overs against Joe Root, who had been dismissed by him 11 times previously. Pathan suggested that an additional over could have increased pressure on Root and potentially altered the match’s outcome. This perceived reluctance to push harder at crucial moments led Pathan to question Bumrah’s commitment during the series.
While acknowledging Bumrah’s occasional strong performances, Pathan expressed disappointment that the pacer did not meet the expectations placed on him as a senior player. He rated Bumrah six out of ten, emphasizing the responsibility senior players have in securing victories. In the first Test, although Bumrah took five wickets in the first innings, he failed to take any in the second innings when India needed him most. Similarly, in the Leeds Test, England scored heavily without facing significant pressure from Bumrah, who did not claim a single wicket.
Pathan’s critique raises important questions about player workload management and strategic decisions in high-stakes series. As India prepares for future international fixtures, balancing player rest with performance expectations will be crucial. The discussion initiated by Pathan highlights the need for clear communication and strategy alignment between players and management to ensure optimal team performance.
