Israeli Columbia University professor Shai Davidai has resigned, citing the university’s inadequate response to anti-Israel protests on campus. Davidai expressed his dissatisfaction with the university’s leadership, stating that they have failed to address what he perceives as anti-Jewish, anti-Israeli, and anti-American sentiments. He criticized the faculty for losing its moral direction and accused colleagues of ignoring the issue. Davidai’s decision to leave was confirmed by a Columbia University spokesperson, who acknowledged his departure effective July 8, 2025, and thanked him for his contributions.
Davidai also revealed that an investigation against him, initiated in February 2024, had been dropped. He shared this update on social media, highlighting that the Office of Institutional Equity concluded its investigation without finding any wrongdoing or imposing penalties. This investigation stemmed from allegations that Davidai had harassed students during a protest in October 2024 and was subsequently barred from the main campus after organizing a pro-Israel demonstration.
Throughout his tenure, Davidai has been a vocal advocate for Israel and Jewish students, especially following the October 7 terror attacks. He has consistently criticized Columbia University for permitting anti-Israel protests and disruptions. His outspoken stance gained significant attention when he publicly condemned then-president Minouche Shafik for not opposing what he described as “pro-terror” organizations.
Davidai’s departure underscores ongoing tensions at academic institutions regarding free speech and protest management. His resignation raises questions about how universities balance diverse viewpoints while maintaining a respectful and safe environment for all students and staff.
