Jagdeep Dhankhar, India’s 14th Vice President, has resigned from his position two years before the end of his term, citing health reasons. Known for his outspoken nature, Dhankhar’s tenure was marked by significant interactions with both the Rajya Sabha and as the Governor of West Bengal. His resignation has sparked discussions, with the Opposition Congress suggesting that there might be underlying reasons beyond what has been publicly stated.
Throughout his career, Dhankhar was known for his candid remarks and frequent clashes with the Opposition. He often voiced strong opinions on the judiciary, particularly concerning the separation of powers. His tenure as Vice President was characterized by these bold stances, which sometimes led to tensions within political circles.
Born into a farmer’s family in Kithana, Rajasthan, Dhankhar’s rise to one of India’s highest offices is a testament to his determination and skill. Educated at Chittorgarh’s Sainik School and Rajasthan University, he began his career as a lawyer before transitioning into politics. Initially part of the Congress during PV Narasimha Rao’s tenure, he later joined the BJP as Ashok Gehlot rose in Rajasthan politics.
Appointed as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019, Dhankhar quickly became a prominent figure in national politics. His tenure was marked by frequent confrontations with the Mamata Banerjee government over issues such as law and order and federalism. His assertive approach kept him in the political spotlight throughout his governorship.
As Vice President, Dhankhar faced challenges from the Opposition, including an unprecedented attempt to remove him from office. Despite this, he maintained his position and continued to advocate for issues important to him. In the 2022 Vice-Presidential election, he secured a decisive victory against opposition candidate Margaret Alva, achieving the highest margin of victory since 1992.
