Jasprit Bumrah, India’s pace spearhead, is expected to participate in the upcoming Asia Cup T20 tournament scheduled in the UAE. This decision comes as part of a strategic move by the Indian cricket team management, which may see Bumrah being rested for the opening Test against the West Indies in early October. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is poised to finalize the squad on August 19 or 20, contingent upon receiving medical updates from the Centre of Excellence’s Sports Science team. These updates will include assessments of all players, notably skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has resumed batting practice in Bengaluru.
The vice-captaincy role for the Asia Cup squad is a subject of keen interest. Shubman Gill, following his impressive performance in the recent Test series against England, is a strong contender. However, he faces competition from Axar Patel, who was previously designated vice-captain during India’s home series against England. The selection committee aims to maintain continuity, a strategy that has yielded success since Suryakumar Yadav assumed the T20 captaincy.
The Indian selectors face challenging decisions with a wealth of talent in the top-order. Players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya form a formidable lineup. Despite this depth, finding a place for emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan remains difficult. KL Rahul, primarily an ODI keeper, is unlikely to be considered due to his batting position.
Sanju Samson is expected to be the primary wicketkeeper. However, the second keeper’s slot is contested between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jitesh’s impressive IPL performance with RCB strengthens his case as a finisher.
Hardik Pandya continues as India’s leading white-ball seam-bowling all-rounder. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s injury may prevent his participation. Shivam Dube’s recent comeback enhances his selection prospects alongside spin-bowling all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.
The third seamer position remains undecided between Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Krishna’s 25 wickets in the last IPL season make him a strong candidate, while Rana’s ability to deliver heavy balls adds intrigue to the selection process.
