Jasprit Bumrah, India’s leading fast bowler, played only three out of five Tests in the series against England. Initially, it was believed that his limited participation was due to workload management. However, a new report suggests that a knee injury was the actual reason for his absence from the final Test at The Oval. Despite hopes that he might extend his participation due to the gaps between matches, Bumrah adhered to the pre-decided plan and did not play beyond the agreed three Tests.
According to a report by TOI, a BCCI official confirmed that Bumrah is suffering from a knee injury. Fortunately, it is not considered severe and does not require surgery. The BCCI medical team is currently awaiting further scan results to assess his condition. This revelation has sparked discussions about Bumrah’s future in Test cricket, especially given his history of injuries.
Bumrah’s absence from the series decider has raised questions about his availability for future five-match Test series. With the next such series scheduled against Australia in 2027, there is uncertainty about whether Bumrah will be fully fit for such commitments. His performance in the series was notable, with 14 wickets across three Tests, including two five-wicket hauls at Leeds and Lord’s.
India’s upcoming Test schedule includes shorter series against West Indies and South Africa. Additionally, significant white-ball tournaments like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup are on the horizon. Given these commitments, managing Bumrah’s workload becomes crucial. A BCCI source emphasized the need for a clear strategy to manage his Test career effectively, ensuring he remains fit for key tournaments without risking further injury.
