Jen Pawol is set to make history this weekend at Truist Park as the first female umpire to officiate a regular-season Major League Baseball game. Her journey to this milestone has been marked by dedication and resilience, culminating in her role in the Atlanta Braves-Miami Marlins doubleheader. On Saturday, she will manage the bases, followed by her position behind the plate on Sunday.
Pawol’s path to the major leagues was anything but straightforward. Starting her umpiring career in 2016 with Rookie ball, she steadily progressed through various minor leagues, including the New York/Penn League, Midwest League, South Atlantic League, Double-A, and finally Triple-A in 2023. Her promotion to Triple-A marked a significant achievement as she became the first woman in 34 years to umpire at that level and participate in its championship game.
The road to the majors was long and challenging for Pawol, involving over 1,200 minor league games and countless hours of video review. Her passion for baseball began during her playing days as a catcher and evolved into a deep commitment to umpiring. Despite warnings from seasoned umpires about the decade-long journey through the minors, Pawol persevered.
Pawol’s historic debut will be witnessed by around 30 family members and friends. She has also received support from trailblazing female umpires like Christine Wren, Pam Postema, and Ria Cortesio. Their encouragement has been instrumental in her journey.
In an era where symbolic gestures often overshadow merit, Jen Pawol’s story is a testament to grit and determination. Her achievement is not a PR stunt but a well-deserved recognition of her hard work and dedication. As she steps onto the field this weekend, she becomes part of a select group of female officials in major men’s sports leagues.
