Former National Security Advisor John Bolton has expressed concerns over President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on India, emphasizing the potential long-term consequences for U.S.-India relations. Bolton criticized the hefty tariffs imposed by the U.S. on India for purchasing Russian oil, arguing that these measures could undermine decades of American diplomatic efforts to distance India from Russia and China. He pointed out that Trump’s apparent favoritism towards China over India could be a significant strategic error.
The tariffs, which include a 25% secondary tariff, were intended to pressure India into reducing its oil imports from Russia. However, Bolton noted that these actions have led to a negative response from India, which perceives the tariffs as unfair, especially since China has not been subjected to similar measures. This disparity in treatment could potentially drive India closer to Russia and China, contrary to U.S. strategic interests.
Bolton’s concerns are echoed by Christopher Padilla, a former U.S. trade official, who warned that the tariffs might damage the long-term relationship between the U.S. and India. The perception of the U.S. as an unreliable partner could linger, affecting future diplomatic and economic collaborations.
In an Op-Ed for The Hill, Bolton criticized Trump’s leniency towards Beijing, suggesting that it might compromise U.S. strategic interests in pursuit of a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He cautioned that this approach could be a grave mistake if it results in more favorable treatment for China compared to India.
Despite the tariffs, India has defended its oil imports from Russia, labeling the U.S. actions as “unfair and unreasonable.” Moscow has supported New Delhi’s stance, accusing the U.S. of exerting illegal trade pressure. This situation presents Russian President Vladimir Putin with an opportunity to further his agenda during upcoming discussions with Trump.
