A political storm has erupted following comments by actor-turned-politician and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, who linked the escalating drug abuse in Himachal Pradesh to narcotics trafficking from Pakistan via Punjab. Her statements, made in support of Himachal Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla’s “Udta Punjab” warning, have sparked a backlash from Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
During the Monsoon Session of Parliament, newly elected Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut alleged that drugs were infiltrating Himachal Pradesh through Punjab, adversely affecting the state’s youth and families. She drew parallels with the 2016 Bollywood film ‘Udta Punjab’, warning that if immediate action is not taken, Himachal could face a similar crisis.
Ranaut expressed concern over the increasing number of young people in Himachal Pradesh falling victim to addiction and resorting to crime. She described a grim scenario where youth are engaging in theft and selling family possessions to sustain their drug habits. This situation, she claimed, is causing immense distress to families.
Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla echoed these concerns, issuing a public warning about the potential for the state to become the next “Udta Punjab” if the drug menace is not addressed urgently. He highlighted a significant rise in narcotics-related cases under the NDPS Act, emphasizing the need for immediate action to protect future generations.
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema criticized Ranaut’s remarks as irresponsible, suggesting she should focus on BJP-ruled states before blaming Punjab. He accused her of making baseless statements without evidence and questioned her silence on drug issues in other states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
Governor Shukla also pointed out the lack of rehabilitation infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, noting that only one facility exists in Kullu. Despite government claims of identifying land for a new center in Sirmaur, no progress has been made, highlighting a lack of urgency in addressing the crisis.
