A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Kentucky when a 15-year-old boy, Luis Jocsan Nanez Lopez, was allegedly shot and killed by Gildardo Amandor-Martinez, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen. The tragic event occurred as Lopez attempted to protect his mother from an alleged sexual assault in their family apartment. The accused, who is reportedly an illegal immigrant, is said to have been involved in a violent altercation that also left the teen’s younger sister injured.
According to court documents, the incident took place on July 20 when Amandor-Martinez returned from a bar around 2:30 a.m. He allegedly attempted to force himself on his girlfriend without her consent, prompting her to scream for help. Hearing the commotion, Lopez entered his mother’s room and asked if he should call the police. Despite being told to leave by Amandor-Martinez and reassured by his mother that they would discuss it in the morning, Lopez stayed to protect his family.
The situation escalated when Amandor-Martinez grabbed a suitcase as if to leave but instead retrieved a pistol. He allegedly fired through a door three times, fatally striking Lopez in the face. The mother managed to escape with her three other children, including a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old. As they fled, she reported hearing additional gunshots.
Amandor-Martinez faces charges of murder, first-degree assault, and attempted rape. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on him to prevent his release from custody. It was revealed that he had attempted to enter the United States illegally three times in 2021 under the Biden administration, succeeding on his third attempt.
The death of Luis Lopez has sent shockwaves through the community. He was set to begin his sophomore year at Rowan County Senior High School. Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized current immigration policies, attributing the tragedy to what she described as “open-border policies.” She emphasized the need for stricter immigration enforcement to prevent similar incidents.
