The Kerala Story, a Hindi-language film, sparked significant debate upon its release in 2023 due to its portrayal of religious conversion. Initially promoted as the “true story of 32,000 females” coerced into conversion, the film faced accusations of being propaganda. Despite this, it recently garnered attention for winning two National Film Awards: Best Director for Sudipto Sen and Best Cinematography for Prasantanu Mohapatra. This recognition has reignited discussions about the film’s controversial themes.
Last Friday, the winners of the 71st National Awards were announced by jury chairperson Ashutosh Gowariker. The Kerala Story was honored in two categories, sparking curiosity given its divisive subject matter. Gowariker praised the film’s stark and realistic cinematography and commended Sen’s direction for tackling a difficult topic with clarity.
The film’s accolades have not been without criticism. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the jury’s decision, arguing that it legitimizes a divisive narrative. The film had previously faced backlash from political parties and social media users who accused it of being part of a political agenda to create animosity.
Producer Vipul Shah defended the film, asserting its basis on true stories despite allegations of political bias. The Supreme Court intervened when West Bengal banned the film, requiring a disclaimer that it is a “fictionalised account” with no authentic data supporting the claim of 32,000 conversions. This legal battle highlighted the tension between artistic expression and factual representation.
Despite controversies, The Kerala Story has achieved significant recognition with its National Awards win. Director Sudipto Sen expressed gratitude for the support from audiences worldwide. The film’s journey from being labeled as propaganda to receiving national acclaim underscores the complex interplay between cinema, politics, and public perception.
