Kerrville’s ‘River of Angels’ Memorial Honors Flood Victims

A Community in Mourning

In Kerrville, a poignant memorial known as the ‘River of Angels’ has emerged to honor the victims of last weekend’s devastating floods. Over the past 72 hours, a wall of flowers and photographs has taken shape, serving as a powerful expression of collective grief. This roadside tribute has become a solemn gathering point for locals to reflect, remember, and share their sorrow as they grapple with the tragedy’s immense scale.

The Memorial’s Origins

The memorial was initiated by Leo Soto, who traveled from Miami to lay the first flowers. His non-profit organization, Wall of Hope, has been creating memorials since the Surfside condo collapse in 2021. Soto described the site as a special place where community members quickly joined in to attach flowers around the victims’ photographs. The addition of teddy bears, drawings, and balloons has transformed it into a healing space for the community.

Impact on the Community

Kerr County was hit hardest by the floods, with at least 100 deaths and over 160 people still missing. The memorial’s unofficial name, ‘River of Angels,’ reflects the profound loss experienced by the community. Residents like Carolyn Miller express their devastation and acknowledge that recovery will take years. Despite this, the resilience and support from Texans and others across the country remain strong.

Personal Stories of Loss

Anne Lowery, a lifelong Kerrville resident, compares this disaster to previous floods but notes its unprecedented impact. She fondly remembers local coach Reece Zunker, who perished along with his wife, leaving their two sons missing. High school student Madison Boner recalls Zunker’s encouragement and dedication to his students.

Faith as a Source of Comfort

Bishop Julian Dobbs of St. Michael and All Angels Church emphasizes the importance of faith during this time. His church offers prayer and support to first responders and victims. Dobbs highlights the sacredness of each life lost and encourages gathering for worship to find hope amidst tragedy.
