The Indian cricket team achieved a historic milestone by securing their first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Sunday. This remarkable win ended a 58-year drought at the venue, as India defeated England by a commanding 336 runs to level the five-match series at 1-1. Virat Kohli, India’s star player, took to social media to commend the team’s outstanding performance, particularly highlighting Shubman Gill’s significant impact on the game. Kohli also made special mentions of Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj for their exceptional contributions.
Shubman Gill was instrumental in India’s success, scoring impressive innings of 269 and 161. His leadership on the field was equally commendable, as he became the first batsman in Test history to achieve scores of 250 and 150 in the same match. This achievement marked his third century in just two Tests as captain, following his earlier score of 147 in India’s initial series loss at Headingley.
Fast bowler Akash Deep delivered a standout performance, taking 10 wickets in a Test match for the first time. His figures of 4 for 88 and 6 for 99 were pivotal in dismantling England’s batting lineup. Deep’s efforts were especially noteworthy given that he was playing only his second Test in the series after Jasprit Bumrah was rested. His match figures of 10-147 are now the best of his eight-Test career.
Mohammed Siraj also played a crucial role with the ball, securing a six-wicket haul (6 for 70) in England’s first innings and adding another wicket (1 for 57) in the second. England’s Jamie Smith was the only batsman to offer significant resistance with scores of 184 not out and 88 across both innings.
This victory not only marked India’s maiden Test win at Edgbaston but also underscored Shubman Gill’s growing stature as a leader. The team’s fearless approach and relentless pressure on England were key factors in their triumph, as highlighted by Kohli’s praise on social media.
