Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited Illinois to express her concerns about the state’s approach to handling criminal illegal immigrants. During her visit to a Chicago suburb, Noem criticized Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, accusing them of obstructing efforts to remove dangerous individuals from the streets. She highlighted recent arrests by ICE, including a Mexican immigrant convicted of predatory sexual assault against a minor, a Polish national convicted of attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery, and an immigrant from Micronesia with multiple DUI convictions.
Noem emphasized the real-world consequences of sanctuary policies, which she believes endanger law enforcement officers and local communities. She argued that these policies prioritize the protection of criminals over the safety of families and businesses striving to thrive in their communities. Noem’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate over sanctuary jurisdictions and their impact on public safety.
Representatives for Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Noem’s accusations. Noem accused Illinois leaders of ignoring laws designed to protect citizens by allowing dangerous criminals to remain on the streets. She expressed concern that these policies favor criminals over law-abiding citizens who have contributed to building the nation.
Noem revealed that in the past seven months, ICE has issued over 1,664 detainers in Chicago, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. However, she noted that Chicago’s leadership has only complied with 8% of these detainers, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current immigration enforcement efforts in the city.
