Landslide Captured Live Amid Severe Weather

A dramatic landslide in Uttarkashi’s Nalupani was captured live during an NDTV broadcast, highlighting the severe weather conditions affecting the region. The incident occurred amid a series of cloudbursts and flash floods on Wednesday, causing significant disruption and danger. As NDTV reporter Ravish Shukla covered the unfolding disaster, visuals showed large rocks tumbling down a hillside, prompting the reporter to urge nearby individuals to move to safety.

Impact of Extreme Rainfall in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing extreme rainfall, leading to widespread damage to property and loss of life. The heavy rains have triggered numerous landslides across Uttarkashi, with over a dozen locations affected, including Dharasu Band, Naagun, Matiyali, Bandarkot, Naakoori, and Maneri. The adverse weather has resulted in blocked roads and hindered rescue operations.

Disaster Strikes Dharali Village

In Dharali village, located on the route to Gangotri, a massive cloudburst led to devastating flash floods on Tuesday. The floods swept through homes, trees, and vehicles, trapping 60-70 people and resulting in at least four fatalities. Dharali is a key stopover for travelers heading to Gangotri, known for its hotels and homestays. The village suffered extensive damage as buildings collapsed under the force of the mudslide.

Challenges in Rescue Operations

The landslides have blocked 163 roads across Uttarakhand, including major highways and border roads. This has significantly impeded rescue efforts and prevented personnel from reaching affected areas. The region’s challenging terrain and ongoing severe weather conditions continue to pose difficulties for rescue teams working tirelessly to mitigate the disaster’s impact.

Himachal Pradesh Also Affected

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall has led to landslides that have closed National Highway 35 near Nigulsari in Kinnaur. Additionally, the Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway is shut due to debris at Chakki Mor in Shimla. These closures further complicate travel and rescue operations in the region.
