Late-night television hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon have taken aim at U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods. This move includes an initial 25% tariff that took effect on Thursday, with an additional 25% set to be implemented by August 28. The tariffs are part of a broader penalty for India’s purchase of Russian oil, affecting various products such as gauze, bandages, and wading materials. During “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert humorously addressed the impact of these tariffs, suggesting that they would lead to increased prices for everyday items. He joked about launching a new product called “Steve’s wad,” poking fun at the rising costs. Colbert further commented on the sweeping nature of these tariffs, which affect over 90 countries, noting that the import taxes have reached levels not seen since the Great Depression.
In addition to India, Brazil is another country facing a 50% tariff under Trump’s new policy. Colbert highlighted this by humorously referring to the situation as “bad news for meat-based Americans.” The tariffs are expected to significantly raise the prices of Brazilian exports like bananas, mangos, and pineapples. Jimmy Fallon also weighed in on the issue during his show, pointing out that the tariffs now affect more than 90 countries, including Canada and India. He humorously noted that North Korea and Epstein Island were among the few places not subjected to these charges. Fallon further joked about the potential increase in toilet paper prices, illustrating the widespread impact of these tariffs on everyday consumer goods.
The Trump administration is facing criticism not only for its tariff policies but also for its handling of other controversies, such as the case involving disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The backlash highlights growing discontent with the administration’s trade strategies and their implications for international relations.
