A heated altercation erupted outside the Supreme Court, capturing public attention as a lawyer and a dog lover engaged in a physical confrontation. The incident, recorded on video, shows the lawyer aggressively pulling and hitting the civilian twice before bystanders intervened. This clash highlights the tensions surrounding the Supreme Court’s recent directive to relocate stray dogs from residential areas to designated shelters.
The video, which quickly went viral, is believed to have been recorded on August 11, coinciding with the day the Supreme Court issued its order. In the footage, onlookers can be heard shouting and expressing their disapproval of the lawyers’ actions. The incident underscores the emotional and divisive nature of the court’s decision among different community groups.
On Monday, the Supreme Court instructed civic authorities in Delhi NCR, including Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, to establish dog shelters promptly. These facilities are required to employ professionals for dog management, sterilization, and immunization while ensuring security measures like CCTV installations are in place. Justice Pardiwala emphasized that this initiative serves the public interest and urged swift implementation without emotional interference.
The court’s decision has sparked significant backlash from dog lovers and animal rights advocates. Former Union minister Maneka Gandhi criticized the order as “impractical” and “financially unviable,” citing concerns over ecological impacts and exorbitant costs. She highlighted the logistical challenges of accommodating Delhi’s estimated three lakh stray dogs in shelters.
In response to widespread criticism, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai assured a reassessment of the ban on stray dogs. This move reflects ongoing societal debates about balancing public safety with animal welfare.
