Expert Recommends 11 Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk

Recent advancements in Alzheimer’s research, including the approval of blood tests for early detection, have significantly improved the ability to diagnose the disease at earlier stages. This is particularly crucial as dementia rates are rising among younger populations. Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist and founder of Amen Clinics in California, shared insights with Fox News Digital on managing Alzheimer’s risk. He emphasized that Alzheimer’s begins affecting the brain decades before symptoms appear, citing a case of a 59-year-old woman likely experiencing brain changes since her 20s. Dr. Amen advocates for early brain protection strategies.

Dr. Amen, author of “Change Your Brain Every Day,” highlighted that half of Alzheimer’s cases could be preventable by addressing 11 major risk factors he identified using the acronym “BRIGHTMINDS.” The primary predictor of Alzheimer’s is low blood flow to the brain, which can be exacerbated by substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as sedentary lifestyles and obesity. To counteract this, Dr. Amen recommends regular physical activity, such as alternating between normal and brisk walking for 30 minutes daily.

He also noted that retirement and aging often lead to reduced cognitive activity, increasing Alzheimer’s risk. To combat this, he encourages continuous learning and mental engagement. Inflammation is another significant factor linked to psychiatric issues and diseases like cancer and heart disease. Simple practices like flossing can reduce gum inflammation, which is connected to brain health.

Dr. Amen stressed that genetics are not definitive but should prompt proactive health measures. He advises individuals to understand their familial health risks and adopt daily prevention strategies accordingly. He shared his personal experience of avoiding heart disease despite a family history by adhering to a prevention program.

Avoiding head trauma and exposure to toxins is crucial for maintaining mental health. Dr. Amen warns against common toxins such as lead and mercury and suggests supporting detoxification through hydration and diet rich in brassicas. Sauna use is also recommended for its potential protective effects against Alzheimer’s.

Maintaining mental health is vital for brain function, with Dr. Amen advising against negative thought patterns. He underscores the importance of vitamin D for brain and immune health and recommends annual hormone balance checks to mitigate Alzheimer’s risk.

“Diabesity,” or the coexistence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, poses a significant threat to health, impacting brain size and function negatively. Dr. Amen stresses the importance of weight management for overall well-being.

Finally, quality sleep is essential for cognitive function, aiding memory, energy levels, and decision-making abilities. Prioritizing sleep can significantly contribute to Alzheimer’s prevention efforts.
