Lok Sabha Faces Repeated Adjournments Amid Opposition Protests

Parliamentary Proceedings Disrupted by Opposition Slogans

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha experienced significant disruptions as opposition parties, led by the Congress, demanded discussions on pressing issues. The chaos began with the Congress pushing for a debate on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. The uproar led to the initial adjournment of both Houses until 12 pm.

Question Hour Disrupted in Lok Sabha

During the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, opposition MPs raised slogans demanding an immediate debate on the Pahalgam incident. Speaker Om Birla was compelled to adjourn the session until 12 pm due to the disorder. However, upon resumption, the disruptions continued, leading to another adjournment until 2 pm.

Debate Intensifies in Rajya Sabha

In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Trump’s ceasefire claims as an affront to India’s sovereignty. In response, BJP chief JP Nadda accused the Congress of diverting attention from critical issues. Earlier, Congress had submitted Suspension of Business notices to discuss the Pahalgam attack and electoral roll revisions in Bihar.

Prime Minister Modi Addresses Key Issues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Pahalgam issue during his speech at the Monsoon Session’s commencement, commending the Indian military’s role in Operation Sindoor and acknowledging MPs’ efforts in conveying India’s stance globally. The Congress plans to push for discussions on restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, Schedule VI status for Ladakh, and Manipur’s situation.

Government Appeals for Parliamentary Cooperation

At an all-party meeting with representatives from 51 political parties, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged cooperation for smooth parliamentary proceedings. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar also emphasized mutual respect among political parties.

Legislative Agenda for Monsoon Session

The government has outlined a busy legislative agenda for the Monsoon Session, which includes introducing eight new bills and discussing eight pending ones. Key bills include the Income-Tax Bill and Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill aimed at enhancing business ease and regulatory compliance.
