Luxurious Deception: Mangaluru Conman Arrested in Multi-Crore Loan Fraud

Conman’s Arrest Unveils Elaborate Scam

A 45-year-old man from Mangaluru, Rohan Saldanha, has been arrested for orchestrating a multi-crore scam that targeted businessmen and industrialists. Saldanha’s arrest followed a police raid on his opulent home, revealing the extent of his fraudulent operations. He posed as a high-level financier, promising large loans at low interest rates to lure his victims.

Targeting the Wealthy

Saldanha’s targets were ultra-rich individuals and entrepreneurs across various districts and states. By inviting potential clients to his lavish bungalow in Jappinamogaru, he created an illusion of wealth and credibility. His strategy involved building trust through displays of opulence and professionalism.

Deceptive Legal Formalities

To further convince his victims, Saldanha introduced a fake lawyer, using the name of a well-known local attorney. This added layer of deception involved clients in seemingly legitimate legal processes, including document verification and formalities. Victims were then asked to pay substantial sums for registration and stamp duty, sometimes amounting to Rs 10 crore.

Elaborate Hideouts for Evasion

The police discovered that Saldanha’s home was designed with secret chambers and concealed sections. These hideouts allowed him to evade detection during critical moments, providing him with the means to disappear without a trace after collecting money from his victims.

Scale of the Fraud

Within months, Saldanha executed fraudulent transactions estimated at Rs 40-50 crore. Over several years, the total fraud could be significantly higher. Currently, three official cases have been registered against him—two in Mangaluru and one in Chitradurga. Authorities suspect more victims may exist but have not come forward due to fear or embarrassment.

Ongoing Investigation

Following a victim’s complaint, Mangaluru Police arrested Saldanha and are expanding their investigation to uncover the full scope of his operations. They are also probing potential accomplices and urging other victims to report their experiences.
