The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revoked the license of a canteen following an incident where Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad assaulted a staff member over the quality of food served. The altercation, captured on video, shows Gaikwad physically attacking the staffer after being served what he claimed was stale dal. The footage, which went viral, has sparked widespread criticism and raised questions about the behavior of political leaders in the state.
The incident occurred at the Akashwani MLA Hostel Canteen, operated by Ajanta Caterers. Gaikwad, a member of Eknath Shinde’s faction of Shiv Sena, ordered a thali and was displeased with the quality of the dal, which he described as “rotten.” In the video, Gaikwad is seen demanding to speak with the staff responsible for preparing the meal. When Yogesh Kutran, a canteen staff member, arrived, Gaikwad made him smell the dal before slapping and punching him multiple times.
Following the incident, the FDA conducted an inspection of the canteen’s facilities. The inspection revealed numerous hygiene violations, including unclean kitchen floors, improper separation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preparation areas, and inadequate storage conditions. Raw vegetables were found on the floor, and food was being chopped on uneven and chipped wooden boards. Additionally, workers were observed without proper uniforms or gloves, and there was no designated changing area for them.
The FDA’s report also highlighted issues such as open dustbins near food preparation areas, dead flies in a butter pot, and multiple reuses of cooking oil without proper records. These findings led to the decision to revoke the canteen’s license as a measure to ensure food safety standards are upheld.
Gaikwad defended his actions by stating that he acted as a “warrior” and used language taught by Balasaheb Thackeray. He expressed no regret for his behavior and emphasized his background in martial arts as justification for his response. The incident has prompted discussions about accountability and conduct among elected officials in Maharashtra.
