Maharashtra Minister Denies Cash Allegations After Viral Video

Maharashtra Minister Caught in Controversy Over Viral Video

Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Shirsat has become embroiled in controversy following the release of a video that allegedly shows him smoking in a private room with a bag purportedly filled with cash. This incident comes just a day after Shirsat acknowledged receiving an income tax notice regarding a significant increase in his assets between the 2019 and 2024 Assembly elections. The video, which quickly gained traction online, was shared by Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, who used it to criticize the ruling alliance.

Political Rivalry Intensifies Amid Allegations

Sanjay Raut, a prominent figure in the rival Shiv Sena faction, posted the video on social media, taking aim at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Raut’s comments suggested that Fadnavis’s reputation was being damaged by such incidents within his administration. The political tension between the factions has been further exacerbated by these allegations, highlighting the ongoing power struggle within Maharashtra’s political landscape.

Minister Shirsat Defends Himself Against Accusations

In response to the allegations, Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat clarified that the bag seen in the video contained clothes, not cash as claimed by his political opponents. Shirsat, who represents Aurangabad (West) and is aligned with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, confirmed that he had received a notice from the Income Tax Department. The notice requested clarification on the growth of his personal assets over the past five years.

Income Tax Notice Sparks Further Scrutiny

Shirsat explained that complaints had been filed against him with the Income Tax Department, prompting the issuance of the notice. He stated that he was initially supposed to respond to it on Wednesday but had requested additional time to provide a comprehensive response. Shirsat maintained his innocence, asserting that no wrongdoing had occurred and expressing confidence in addressing the concerns raised by the authorities.
