A video capturing Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad assaulting a canteen staff member in Mumbai has ignited controversy in the Maharashtra Council. The incident, which involved Gaikwad slapping and punching the staffer, Yogesh Kutram, over food quality issues, has drawn widespread criticism. Gaikwad, representing Buldhana, expressed no remorse for his actions, citing repeated complaints about stale food that went unaddressed.
The issue was brought to the Council’s attention by Anil Parab, an MLC from Shiv Sena (UBT), prompting a response from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Fadnavis condemned the act, emphasizing that it undermines the dignity of the legislative body and sends a negative message to the public. He urged the Council Chair to take independent action against Gaikwad, highlighting the seriousness of misusing power as a public representative.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also criticized Gaikwad’s behavior, stressing the responsibility of elected officials to act appropriately. Shinde condemned the assault and communicated to Gaikwad that such actions are unacceptable.
Gaikwad defended his actions by claiming that the food served was “rotten” and had previously caused him to vomit. He argued that his complaints about outdated chicken and egg stocks were ignored, affecting thousands daily. Despite acknowledging his aggressive response, Gaikwad insisted he acted as taught by Balasaheb Thackeray and expressed no regret for his conduct.
The incident has further highlighted divisions within the Shiv Sena following its 2022 split. Gaikwad aligned with Eknath Shinde’s faction after the split from Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership. Thackeray distanced himself from Gaikwad’s actions, asserting that Gaikwad is no longer part of his faction.
