A tragic shooting unfolded at a Manhattan high-rise on Monday evening, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. The incident occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. Among the victims were an off-duty NYPD officer, a Blackstone executive, a security guard, and an employee of Rudin Management Company. A fifth person was critically injured and remains hospitalized. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the building’s 33rd floor.
The NYPD officer killed was Didarul Islam, a 33-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh who served in the 47th Precinct. Islam was off-duty and working as a private security guard at the time of the shooting. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children. Blackstone mourned the loss of Wesley LePatner, a senior executive who had been with the company since 2014. LePatner was known for her leadership in real estate investment and her active role in the Jewish community. Aland Etienne, a dedicated security officer and member of SEIU, was also among those killed. Rudin Management has not released details about their employee out of respect for the family’s privacy.
Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident with a history of mental health issues, reportedly harbored grievances against the NFL. Authorities are investigating how he obtained the AR-15-style rifle used in the attack. Tamura’s vehicle was tracked traveling cross-country before arriving in New York City. A suicide note found at the scene suggested Tamura believed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (C.T.E.) and expressed his frustrations with the NFL.
In response to this senseless act of violence, New York City hosted a multi-faith vigil to honor the victims. The Police Benevolent Association and other organizations have expressed their condolences and support for the families affected by this tragedy. The building remains closed as investigations continue.
