Maryland Lawmakers Criticize ICE Facility for Lack of Transparency

A group of Maryland’s congressional delegation, led by Senator Angela Alsobrooks, attempted to gain access to an ICE processing center in Baltimore, which Alsobrooks described as a “shameful, secret place.” The delegation included Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representatives Kweisi Mfume, Johnny Olszewski Jr., Sarah Elfreth, and Glenn Ivey. Their visit aimed to investigate the conditions under which detainees are processed at the facility. However, they were denied entry, prompting Alsobrooks to express concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability.
The Baltimore ICE office is located within the George Fallon federal building and differs from other detention facilities like the one in Newark, New Jersey. Unlike Newark’s jail-like complex, the Baltimore office serves primarily as a processing center with smaller numbers of detainees at any given time. This distinction did not alleviate concerns among the Maryland lawmakers, who were determined to ensure humane treatment for those processed there.
The visit sparked political reactions, with some accusing the delegation of staging a publicity stunt. Senator John Kennedy criticized the lawmakers’ actions as an attempt to gain media attention. Meanwhile, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons blamed Democrats for the release of criminal aliens in Maryland, particularly in Prince George’s County. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also criticized Senator Van Hollen for allegedly prioritizing criminals over American victims.
Despite these criticisms, Maryland Democrats remained steadfast in their advocacy for oversight of immigration facilities. Representative Mfume argued that denying access to federal lawmakers violates their oversight responsibilities. Representative Ivey expressed disappointment at being turned away, comparing it to experiences in authoritarian regimes.
The visit highlighted divisions within Maryland’s political landscape. Representative April McClain-Delaney and Republican Andy Harris did not participate in the visit. Harris criticized the delegation’s actions and expressed support for immigration enforcement authorities. In response, Alsobrooks suggested Harris should focus on securing disaster relief funds for flood victims in his district.
