Massachusetts Police Training Lists Moms for Liberty as ‘Hate Group’ Alongside Antifa

Massachusetts Police Training Controversy

The Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) has sparked controversy by categorizing the parental rights group, Moms for Liberty, as a “hate group” in its training materials. This classification places the conservative-leaning organization alongside groups like Antifa in a lesson plan titled “Freedom and Hate: Speech, Crimes and Groups.” The training materials, which are used to educate thousands of police officers across the state, have drawn criticism for their portrayal of Moms for Liberty.

Moms for Liberty’s Response

Tina Descovich, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, expressed her concerns about the implications of this classification. In an interview with “Fox & Friends First,” she emphasized that her organization consists of dedicated parents advocating for improved educational environments in public schools. Descovich argued that labeling the group as a threat undermines the safety and reputation of its members. She criticized the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for its role in influencing this perception, as the SPLC had previously designated Moms for Liberty as an “anti-government extremist group” in its 2022 Year In Hate and Extremism report.

Implications of SPLC’s Designation

The SPLC’s designation has had significant repercussions, influencing how law enforcement agencies perceive Moms for Liberty. The MPTC’s training materials cite the SPLC’s extremist label, contributing to the narrative that the group poses a threat similar to that of Antifa. Descovich contends that such classifications are misleading and detrimental to her organization’s mission.

Public Reaction and Lack of Response from MPTC

The inclusion of Moms for Liberty in the MPTC’s training materials has generated public debate about the criteria used to classify organizations as hate groups. Critics argue that such labels can have far-reaching consequences for groups advocating for parental rights. Despite requests for comment, the MPTC has not responded to inquiries regarding their decision to include Moms for Liberty in their training materials.
