Miami Sailing Camp Tragedy: Tugboat Captain Tested for Alcohol After Fatal Collision

Investigation into Miami Sailing Camp Tragedy

The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting a thorough investigation following a tragic collision in Miami that resulted in the deaths of two young girls attending a sailing camp. The incident involved a tugboat and a sailboat, leading to the testing of the tugboat captain for alcohol. This procedure is part of standard protocol in such investigations. The collision occurred on Monday morning, and the results of the alcohol test have not been disclosed.

Victims Identified and Community Impact

One of the victims has been identified as 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich, granddaughter of renowned Argentinian TV producer Cris Morena. The Argentine Consulate in Miami confirmed her identity, expressing their readiness to support the family. Mila’s family includes notable figures in the entertainment industry, with her grandfather Gustavo Yankelevich and father Tomas Yankelevich also being producers, while her mother Sofia Reca is an actor. A second victim, a 13-year-old girl, has not yet been publicly identified.

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns

The collision has raised questions about safety protocols and licensing requirements for the tug and barge crew involved. Capt. Frank Florio of Coast Guard Sector Miami emphasized that all young sailors were wearing life vests at the time of the accident. The investigation will also examine whether the crew had appropriate licenses to operate on Biscayne Bay, a busy waterway known for commercial and recreational activities.

Response from Miami Yacht Club

The Miami Yacht Club, where the girls began their sailing camp activities, is cooperating with law enforcement during this investigation. The club has temporarily closed its facilities out of respect for the affected families and to facilitate response efforts. They expressed deep sorrow over the incident, highlighting their commitment to supporting their community during this difficult time.
