The disappearance of Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old student from Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance in Delhi. Originally from Tripura, Sneha moved to the capital for her studies. On July 7, she left to drop a friend at Sarai Rohilla railway station but has been missing since then. Her last known location was the Signature Bridge, a critical area lacking functional CCTV cameras.
Sneha’s family is in distress, actively seeking help from authorities and the public. Her father, Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) Pritish Debnath (retired), is an Army veteran battling kidney failure. The family reported that Sneha informed her mother she was heading to the railway station early on July 7. However, contact was lost shortly after, and her phone was found switched off by 8:45 am. It was later discovered that the cab driver dropped her at Signature Bridge instead of the intended destination.
The National Disaster Response Force conducted an extensive search within a 7-kilometer radius of Sneha’s last known location on July 9, following a request from the Crime Branch. Despite these efforts, no trace of Sneha has been found. The family noted that she carried only her phone and had not withdrawn cash for four months, leaving her bank balance unchanged.
The family expressed frustration over the delayed filing of a First Information Report (FIR), which occurred more than 48 hours after Sneha went missing. They believe that functional CCTV cameras around Signature Bridge could have provided crucial information about her whereabouts. This incident highlights broader concerns about the safety and security of young women in Delhi.
The family has made an emotional appeal to the public, media, and authorities to help find Sneha and prevent her from becoming just another statistic. They urge anyone with information to come forward. The Tripura Chief Minister’s Office has acknowledged the incident and instructed police to take immediate action.
