Several activists from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, were detained in Thane’s Mira Road as they attempted to march in response to protests against a recent ‘slapgate’ incident. This incident involved MNS members assaulting a food stall owner for not speaking Marathi, sparking widespread controversy.
The situation escalated as dramatic scenes unfolded with MNS workers taking to the streets, only to be apprehended by police and placed into vans. The authorities had not granted permission for the protest, leading to tensions between the demonstrators and law enforcement. Many of the detained activists expressed frustration, questioning why traders were allowed to protest against the ‘slapgate’ incident while their counter-protest was prohibited. They insisted that residents of Maharashtra should learn Marathi and warned of consequences for those who do not comply.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed claims that the police denied permission for the rally. He emphasized that anyone in Maharashtra has the right to protest, provided they obtain police permission. He explained that logistical concerns such as traffic and potential stampede risks were factors in the decision to stop the march. According to Fadnavis, MNS leaders were advised to alter their route but refused, prompting police intervention.
The language dispute centers around an assault on shopkeeper Babulal Chaudhary, who was attacked by MNS members for his staff’s use of Hindi. The incident at ‘Jodhpur Sweet Shop’ went viral on social media, reigniting debates over language use in Maharashtra. The controversy is further complicated by political dynamics, as Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have united against BJP criticisms following the incident.
The political landscape is charged, with BJP leader Nishikant Dubey challenging the Thackerays to confront Hindi speakers outside Maharashtra. Uddhav Thackeray accused the BJP of exploiting divisive tactics for political gain, asserting his opposition to forced language imposition while defending his party’s recent successful rally in Mumbai.
