Narendra Modi Surpasses Indira Gandhi as Second Longest Serving Indian PM

Narendra Modi Achieves Historic Milestone

On July 25, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone by completing 4,078 consecutive days in office. This achievement surpasses the record previously held by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served for 4,077 consecutive days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. Modi now stands as the second longest-serving Prime Minister in India’s history, following Jawaharlal Nehru.

A Record-Breaking Tenure

Modi’s tenure is notable not only for its length but also for several historic distinctions. He is the first Prime Minister born after India’s independence and the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister. Additionally, he is the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Hindi-speaking state. Modi is also the first non-Congress leader to complete two full terms and be re-elected twice with a majority in the Lok Sabha.

Political Achievements and Leadership

Modi’s leadership has been marked by his ability to secure a majority in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections, a feat only matched by Nehru. His political journey began in Vadnagar, Gujarat, where he rose from humble beginnings to become a key figure in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Before his national leadership role, Modi served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister for over a decade.

Global Influence and Vision

Since becoming Prime Minister in 2014, Modi has positioned India as a confident and assertive voice on the global stage. His grassroots connection and strong communication skills have been pivotal in his leadership style. As he continues to lead India, Modi’s tenure reflects both his domestic influence and international presence.
