Filmmaker Mohit Suri has shared his perspective on the ongoing debate surrounding actress Deepika Padukone’s reported departure from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film “Spirit.” The controversy stems from Padukone’s demand for an eight-hour workday, which has sparked discussions about working conditions in the film industry. In an interview with NDTV, Suri emphasized the importance of respecting individual choices while acknowledging the practical constraints that filmmakers face.
Suri highlighted that the decision to adhere to specific work hours often depends on the budget of a project. He stated, “Well, to each their own. I think it depends on the kind of budget you’re working with. I don’t think any director wants to make anyone work beyond what’s required. No one’s sadistic enough to unnecessarily torture someone.” This comment underscores the financial realities that can dictate shooting schedules and working conditions.
The filmmaker pointed out that a content and motivated crew is crucial for producing quality films. He noted that while everyone has the agency to accept or decline a project, it is essential to commit fully once onboard. “You have a choice to be a part of something or not. But what I think is unfair is when someone comes in and starts dictating terms after signing on. You knew what the project entailed – the constraints, the realities,” Suri explained.
As discussions about work hours for top-billed stars continue, Suri reframed the conversation by emphasizing production realities over personal disagreements. He concluded, “Let’s be honest, the root of this debate is not personal. It’s a budget issue. That’s the reality.” This statement shifts focus from individual demands to broader industry challenges.
