The mother of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a congressional intern tragically killed in a drive-by shooting, has voiced strong criticism against the Washington, D.C., Council. She argues that the city is failing to protect its residents from violent crime. Eric, a 21-year-old student from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was shot on June 30 at approximately 10:28 p.m. and succumbed to his injuries on July 1. He was interning for Rep. Ron Estes, R-Kan., at the time of his death.
The incident occurred on the 1200 block of 7th Street, Northwest, near the Mt Vernon Sq 7th St-Convention Center Metro stop. According to police reports, several individuals exited a vehicle and began shooting indiscriminately, resulting in Eric’s death and injuring a 16-year-old male and an adult female. As of now, no suspects have been apprehended.
Tamara Jachym, Eric’s mother, expressed her frustration to Fox News Digital, stating that the D.C. Council treats violent crime as a “joke.” She emphasized the urgency for collaboration between the council and federal government to enhance law enforcement efforts. “Your constituents are dying,” she said. “This isn’t OK.”
Eric is remembered as an “old soul” who cherished spending time with elderly people in his community. His mother described him as someone who valued learning from others regardless of their background or status. “He was just a good kid, and he loved life,” she shared.
Former homicide detective Ted Williams highlighted the difficulties in solving such crimes due to witness intimidation and lack of cooperation. Despite these challenges, authorities remain hopeful for breakthroughs.
Rep. Ron Estes praised Eric for his kind heart and service to Kansas’ 4th District. The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department are offering a $40,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, urging anyone with knowledge to come forward.
