Mumbai Cab Services Disrupted as Ola, Uber, Rapido Drivers Strike

Thousands of Passengers Face Delays Amid Driver Strike

In Mumbai, thousands of passengers are experiencing significant delays and a lack of available cabs due to an indefinite strike by drivers affiliated with Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The protest, which began on July 15, has led to long waiting times and frustration among commuters. The drivers’ strike is primarily focused on demanding fair pay, better regulations, and improved working conditions.

Reasons Behind the Ongoing Strike

The strike is being led by drivers from key areas such as the airport zone, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Andheri, and South Mumbai. The primary grievance among drivers is the low earnings they receive after deducting aggregator commissions and fuel expenses. Many drivers report that their net income sometimes drops to just Rs 8 to Rs 12 per kilometre, which is unsustainable given the rising costs of fuel and vehicle maintenance. The lack of regulatory oversight to safeguard their interests has further exacerbated their dissatisfaction.

Key Demands of the Protesting Drivers

The strike is organized by groups including the Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch, Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh, and the Indian Gig Workers Front. The drivers are calling for economic and regulatory changes. They demand that app-based cab fares be aligned with those of traditional black-and-yellow taxis. Additionally, they seek a ban on bike taxis, a cap on new permits for kaali-peeli cabs and autos, the establishment of a welfare board for app-based drivers, and the introduction of a Maharashtra Gig Workers’ Act to protect their rights. Drivers are also concerned about discounts offered by platforms, which they claim reduce their earnings. They want these costs to be absorbed by the platforms instead.

Lack of Government Regulation

Despite announcing plans for a dedicated policy on aggregator services over a year ago, the Maharashtra government has yet to implement it. A draft policy outlining fare structures, licensing norms, and enforcement measures is ready but still awaits approval. This regulatory vacuum has led to frequent disputes between drivers, app-based platforms, and commuters.

Impact on Commuters

With many app-based cabs off the road, daily travel has become challenging for commuters, especially those heading to the airport. In response to the situation, Mumbai Airport issued an advisory on social media urging passengers to check transport availability and make alternative arrangements in advance. As discussions between striking drivers and transport department officials continue, commuters across Mumbai remain affected by the ongoing strike.
