An alarming incident unfolded in Mumbai’s eastern suburb of Mankhurd, where an 11-year-old boy named Hamza was attacked by a Pit Bull. The dog was deliberately unleashed on him by its owner, Mohammad Sohail Hasan, while the child was inside a parked auto-rickshaw. A video capturing the event shows the frightened child seated next to the dog, with its owner sitting in the front seat, seemingly amused by the child’s distress.
The situation escalated when the dog lunged at Hamza, biting his chin. Despite his fear, Hamza managed to escape from the vehicle, even as the Pit Bull clung to his clothes. Shockingly, instead of intervening, Mr. Hasan continued to laugh as his pet pursued the boy. The incident occurred on a Thursday, leaving Hamza traumatized and scared.
Hamza recounted that no one came to his aid during the attack. Onlookers chose to film the incident rather than help him. This lack of intervention added to the child’s distress and fear following the attack.
Following a complaint filed by Hamza’s father, the police have taken action against Mr. Hasan. He faces charges under sections 291 (negligent abandonment of animals), 125 (causing simple hurt), and 125(A) of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, a notice has been issued under section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
This incident raises significant concerns about public safety and responsible pet ownership in urban areas. The community is urged to be vigilant and report any similar incidents to prevent future occurrences.
