Mumbai drenched as heavy rains disrupt travel and daily life

Mumbai witnessed intense overnight rainfall that brought large parts of the city and surrounding regions to a standstill. Authorities issued an orange alert for the day after heavy downpours caused widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion, and delays in local train services. The impact was felt most severely in areas such as King’s Circle and Matunga market, while Colaba recorded the highest rainfall at 88.2 mm.

Orange Alert Issued After Overnight Showers

The weather department placed Mumbai under an orange alert following a night of relentless rain. Neighboring districts Thane and Raigad were also placed under a red alert due to the intensity of the showers. The alerts signaled the possibility of continued heavy rainfall that could further affect normal life across these regions.

Waterlogging Across Key City Pockets

Several low-lying areas in Mumbai were submerged after hours of uninterrupted rainfall. King’s Circle and the busy Matunga market area were among the worst affected zones where water levels rose quickly, disrupting movement for both pedestrians and vehicles. Commuters reported difficulties navigating flooded streets as vehicles moved slowly through knee-deep water in some stretches.

Traffic Snarls Add to Commuter Woes

The downpour triggered severe traffic congestion on major roads across the city. Vehicles were stranded for long hours as bottlenecks formed at key junctions due to flooding. Motorists struggled with reduced visibility and slippery conditions, while public transport services faced delays as buses had to be rerouted from waterlogged roads.

Local Train Services Disrupted

Mumbai’s suburban rail network, often described as the city’s lifeline, also bore the brunt of the heavy showers. Several trains ran behind schedule as tracks were inundated in multiple sections. The delays left thousands of daily commuters stranded at stations during peak travel hours, further compounding the challenges caused by road traffic disruptions.

Colaba Records Highest Rainfall

Among all monitoring stations in the city, Colaba registered the highest rainfall with 88.2 mm recorded overnight. This figure highlighted the intensity of showers in southern parts of Mumbai compared to other regions that also experienced significant precipitation but at slightly lower levels. The combination of heavy rainfall, waterlogging, and transport disruptions underscored once again how vulnerable Mumbai remains during intense monsoon spells. With alerts still in place for surrounding districts, residents have been urged to remain cautious while stepping out for essential travel only.
