A Unique Raksha Bandhan Celebration

In a touching display of unity and compassion, 15-year-old Anamta Ahmed from Mumbai celebrated Raksha Bandhan with Shivam Mistry, forming a bond that transcends traditional family ties. This unique relationship began last year when Anamta received a hand transplant from Shivam’s late sister, Riya. The ceremony, held on Tithal Beach road in Valsad, was a poignant moment for both families as they honored the memory of Riya and celebrated the new sibling bond.

The Accident and Transplant Journey

Anamta’s life changed dramatically on October 30, 2022, when she suffered a severe accident involving a high-tension cable in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The incident led to the amputation of her right arm. Despite saving her left arm through surgery, Anamta faced significant physical and emotional challenges. Meanwhile, in Gujarat’s Valsad, Riya Mistry fell ill and tragically passed away due to a hemorrhage. Her family decided to donate her organs, including her hands, offering hope to others.

A New Beginning Through Organ Donation

Riya’s family, guided by Dr. Usha Mashri, embraced organ donation as a way to honor their daughter’s memory. Her organs were donated through the Donate Life NGO, leading to Anamta receiving Riya’s right hand at Global Hospital in Mumbai. This made Anamta the youngest person globally to undergo such a procedure at shoulder-level.

Emotional Reunion and Lasting Impact

The Raksha Bandhan celebration was an emotional reunion for both families. Anamta traveled to Valsad to tie a rakhi on Shivam’s wrist, symbolizing their newfound sibling relationship. Shivam’s mother expressed joy in seeing Anamta as part of their family, providing solace amidst their grief over Riya’s loss. The event highlighted the power of organ donation in creating lasting connections and healing emotional wounds.
