NATO jets were deployed overnight in response to Russia’s most extensive drone assault on Ukraine to date, involving over 700 drones, according to officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as a “new massive Russian attack on our cities,” noting that it included “728 drones of various types, including over 300 Shaheds, and 13 missiles – Kinzhals and Iskanders.” Despite the scale of the assault, most targets were intercepted. Zelenskyy highlighted the effectiveness of Ukraine’s interceptor drones, which downed dozens of enemy targets, and emphasized the ongoing expansion of this technology. Mobile fire groups also played a crucial role, successfully neutralizing numerous threats. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian forces for their precision. Ukraine’s Air Force reported that the attack primarily targeted the northwestern city of Lutsk. Preliminary data indicated that “air defenses neutralized 718 enemy air attack vehicles, with 303 shot down by fire and 415 lost in location.” During the unfolding events, Poland’s military announced that “Ukraine, Polish and allied aviation has begun operating in our airspace.” The Polish Armed Forces activated all available resources and reached the highest state of readiness to ensure security in areas bordering Ukraine. Later, they confirmed that operations concluded as the threat level decreased. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it targeted Ukrainian air bases and successfully hit all designated targets. Additionally, Russian forces reportedly shot down 86 Ukrainian drones across six regions in Russia, including near Moscow. Zelenskyy reported damage in several Ukrainian regions and criticized Russia for undermining peace efforts. He called for stringent sanctions against Russian oil exports and secondary sanctions on those purchasing this oil, urging global partners to apply pressure on Russia to end the conflict.
